Do You Have Skin Issues?

Updated: Dec 7, 2021

Sea Buckthorn oil works great both inside and out to support healthy and beautiful skin!

I love sea buckthorn. Its scientific name is hippophae rhamnoides, which originated from the Greek words hippos (horse) and phase (shiny). In Ancient Greece, they fed horses sea buckthorn berries to give them shiny coats.

About seven years ago, I had an herbalist friend recommend that I take a sea buckthorn oil supplement because it supports the immune system and is a good way to get all the omegas (omega-3, omega-6, omega-7, and omega-9). However, as described in a National Institutes of Health (NIH) study, Sea Buckthorn is also great at cleansing the liver.

If you are a skin fanatic, you may know that liver health and skin health are very related.

If this is news to you, you may want to check out the article The Liver-Skin Axis and Your Skin Climate. In simplified terms, the liver cleanses the body of toxins. When our blood is healthy, we have lower inflammation in the body. When our liver gets backed up or sluggish, inflammation increases, and this can cause flare-ups in skin conditions eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, and other issues. In this way, our external skin condition can alert us to aspects of our internal health.

Sea buckthorn oil is not only great for the liver but has other health benefits. According to the Healthline article Top 12 Health Benefits of Sea Buckthorn Oil, benefits also include:

  • Rich in many beneficial nutrients (B vitamins, omegas, and many others)

  • Promotes heart health

  • Helps reduce and stabilize blood sugar

  • Protects your skin

  • Boosts the immune system

  • May help fight cancer cells

  • May improve digestion

  • May improve menopause symptoms

  • May treat dry eyes

  • May lower inflammation

  • May treat dry eyes

A beauty benefit of sea buckthorn oil is that it helps skin regeneration. This can speed healing and even help with sunburns. Its skin regeneration effects also reduce fine lines and wrinkles and support healthy-looking skin, as stated in this study:

“Valuable substances contained in sea-buckthorn oil play an important role in the proper functioning of the human body and give skin a beautiful and healthy appearance.”

My Experience with Sea Buckthorn Oil When my herbalist friend recommended I try it, I went to my local natural foods store. They introduced me to the SIBU Sea Therapy products. I first started taking the SIBU oil supplement. I took the supplement daily for three months and noticed that my skin was healthier and that my eyes were very clear (which can also be a great indication of toxicity levels). I was not checking my blood sugar levels at the time, though I think that the supplement was supportive in that way also.

I saw that the store carried SIBU skincare products, and I started using both the SIBU Facial Cleanser and the SIBU Nourishing Face Cream. I have used both of these products for the last seven years, and they have supported my skin in staying hydrated and looking clear. I have combination dry/oily skin, and I specifically recommend the face cream for anyone with this skin type because it is light and doesn’t clog pores.

I recently just saw this Instagram post for Sea Berry Therapy Night Cream. This stuff looks amazing!

Energetic Properties of Sea Buckthorn While I have included the appropriate research and academic information, this article wouldn’t be authentic without a little “woo-woo.” I love plants and flowers, and I have studied them extensively. Talking about plants strictly regarding their compounds and benefits is fine, but I like to look a little deeper and get to know them personally. I pulled out my Practitioner’s Encyclopedia of Flower Essences to see what energetic description it provided for sea buckthorn. Green Man Essences makes a flower essence, and they offer this description:

“Pioneer. Fresh perspectives; uninvolvement; protection from harmful influences; understanding emotions.”

It is not a surprise to see that the plant is credited with protection from harmful influences. Its role in dispelling toxicity and protecting from UV rays well aligns with its energetic purpose. I am curious about the association with pioneer energy. That is something to be explored!

If you decide to try sea buckthorn in either supplement or topical form, I would love to hear about your experience!
